Kiva Zip seems like a response to criticism in 2009 over Kiva not brokering direct loans to borrowers. Many people emailed me regarding the New York Times article titled Confusion on Where Money Lent to Kiva Goes. Essentially it lends weight to a month long controversy in the blogosphere started by David Roodman’s ‘revelation’ that Kiva does not directly disburse loans to lenders, but rather through intermediary Microfinance Institutions.

If so, they might be right. But I am optimistic that Kiva will make and survive the leap of faith in its users. “Kiva’s new documentation explains, if you read it, that Kiva is a connector not of individual lenders to individual donors, but of individual lenders to microfinance institutions,” he said. Because Kiva U.S. does not have intermediaries, this program does not carry the same problems as Kiva’s international services. Kiva’s international site has only 17 reviews on Trustpilot and is rated a dismal 2.0 out of 5 stars.

I read Kiva's response to the poster's question about it, but maybe someone can explain this to me, because the Kiva response did not make sense to me.

We ultimately see a Kiva “loan” as a gift to a microfinance institution, and we have major concerns about supporting any but the most outstanding microfinance institutions as well as concerns about Kiva’s due diligence process specifically.
