Fonthill Castle was built in the early 1900s as a grand residence for a foremost archaeologist and antiquarian of the time. Renaissance man Henry Chapman Mercer was a person of many talents and pursuits. As a scholar, his life was filled with discoveries and collections, many of which needed a permanent home before this castle’s construction.
